Lesson Activity 2
Physical and Chemical Changes
Objective: Through an online assignment and experiments conducted in class, 5th grade students will be
able to identify and determine the differences between physical and chemical changes with one hundred percent accuracy.
Activity:
Step 1-Students will view a videos on youtube about physical and chemical changes. They will then
complete a T chart comparing the two.

Step
3- Students will complete a T chart in their science notebooks about physical
and chemical changes.
Step 4-
Class activity
Students will be placed in groups the following
class day and will have one of the changes in front of them. Students will work
in groups determine and explain in the change is a physical change or chemical
change. They will then write a well developed paragraph explaining
(collaboratively but all members must write it in their notebooks). Students
will present these explanations to the class.
Step
5.Students will then present their final conclusions to
the class using their observations and information from last nights
homework.

NET STANDARDS MET:
3. Research and Information Fluency--Students apply digital tools to gather,
evaluate, and use information.
a) Plan strategies to guide inquiry
b) Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize and ethically use information
from a variety of sources and media.
Indicator: This will be evident when students are gathering information from watching the video
on Youtube about physical and chemical changes.
Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision
Making
Students use critical thinking
skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make
informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and
resources.
a. Identify and define authentic problems and
significant questions for investigation
b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a
project
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions
and/or make informed decisions
d. Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions
Students will be assessed based on their conclusion and explanation of whether it was a
chemical change or physical change. They will mainly be assessed on how well
they backed up their arguments with the information from last nights homework.
Each student will receive a check plus, a check, or a check minus for a
participation grade for the day based on their group explanation. Every member
must contribute.
Indicator:
This will be evident when students are reflecting on the videos and deciding if
a physical or chemical change occurred.
This lesson makes use of open content through Youtube. Youtube is free to everyone as long
as you have an email account. There are thousands of videos on Youtube and many
can be very effective aids for lessons. The problem that arises is many public
schools block Youtube so that is why that portion of the lesson could be at
home. This way if all children in the class have a computer or can go to a local
library to use a computer, they all have access to the same
information.
Flipped lesson approach- Flipped
lesson approach is a way of blending learning so it can be done both in the
classroom and at home. Often students can watch videos or complete scavenger
hunts at home to help introduce the lesson for the next topic or reinforce what
was learned. By having the students do this work at home they can be introduced
to the subject and have more of an understanding of what to expect. The part of
the lesson in class is really applying what they have learned, perhaps it could
be used as a beginning assessment to see where a teacher can plan from here.
According to the article "Flipped classroom approach A Revolutionary Approach" ,
this approach allows for more discussion and talking in the classroom rather
than spending a majority of time on lecturing. It also allows for more group
project and one on one time with teachers and students.
